AGED FORMER CITIZEN DIES AT MONTICELLO.
Harvey Phillips Bled To Death From Barbed Wire Wound, an Artery In His Leg Being Severed. Relatives here received word Wednesday evening that Harvey Phillips, of Monticello, who resided in Jasper county for many years prior to last spring, had died during the day. No particulars were received and relatives were much surprised as all had understood that he was in perfect health. It was later learned that he had bled to death and the following account is taken from the Monticello Evening Journal: “Mr. Harvey, Phillips, an uncle of D. D. Phillips, 'died at 1:00 o’clock today as the result of a barbed wire wound in the leg. He was doing some work about the yard and in handling the wire a barb caught him in the leg in such a manner as to lacerate an artery. As soon as the family could they called Dr. Coffin but by the time he reached the home Mr. Phillips was gasping for breath and only lived a few minutes after he arrived. He was a man 81 years old and had lived only a few months on the farm north of Riverview cemetery to which he had moved from Jasper county. He has one son living up near McCoysburg.” Deceased was the father of John R. Phillips, of McCoysburg, and grandfather of Mrs. Van Wood, of this city. He was also an uncle of Norman and Marsh Warner, being a brother of their mother. He came to Rensselaer from McCoysburg some three years ago and occupied the Thos. Robinson property, west of Weston cemetery. Last spring he bought a small place near Monticello and moved to it. Although advanced in years he was a very active and well preserved man, and would have passed for not more than 65 years of age. His nephew, Marsh Warner, and grand nephew, County Clerk C. C. Warner, went to Monticello today to assist the widow in caring for the body, which will be shipped here on the 10:05 train Friday morning. The funeral service will be held at the Christian church, Rev. G. H. Clarke preaching, and interment will be made in Weston cemetery.
