Republicans Built a Platform; Democratic Candidates Used It
It is not often that you see a democrat perched on a republican platfoty. This happened in an unusual manner at Indianapolis Tuesday night. Republicans had built a speaking platform in the colored section of Indianapolis, and some 200 colored voters were on hand to hear Lew Shank, the.republican candidate speak. They waited for a long time but Shank did not come and it chanced that Charles Gauss, the democratic candidate, was going that way in his automobile. He jumped out of the machine, mounted the platform, and to the consternation of the republicans on the platform and in the audience, launched into a discussion of the issues of the campaign from a democratic view point. He was made the target of a number of very bitter remarks but staid right on the platform pleading with the voters until some one cried out “Here‘comes Lew.” Then Gauss made no loss of time in getting away and he jumped into his auto and was whirled away, but Shank did not come, having made a mistake in his dates and having gone to speak In another part of the city. It will more than pay you for your time to read our large advertisement in this paper. -- —
