The 5-year-old daughter of V[r. and Mrs. William Symonds, of Princeton, was fatally scalded when she fell backward into a tub of hot water. The child was only partially dressed, the mother having removed the outer clothing preparatory for the wash, "and the flesh in places was cooked to the bone. The smallpox epidemic is spreading in Ft. Wayne, owing to heads of families refusing to call in doctors, contending that the disease is chickenpox. Dr. Brueggeman, secretary of the board of health, brought Prof. Ormsby, of Rush college, there, and the cases were diagonosed as true smallpox. Tony Longo, a Hungarian, employed on the Pennsylvania railroad section at Anderson, was so badly beaten by Frank Costellund, a fellow workman, that he can not live. The Hungarians lived in a box car along the track and Costellund attacked his companion with a shovel, beating his head into a pulp, and then made his escape. William Ryker and Thomas Griswold, factory employes at Richmond, will start Monday for San Francisco, and expect to walk the entire distance. They are not to walk on a wager, but simply to satisfy themselves that the trick can be turned at a rate of thirty miles a day. They expect to reach the Golden Gate within ninety days from the date of leaving Richmond. A night blooming cereus, owned by Miss Nellie Jonas, of Seymour, has the distinction of blooming in daylight, which, according to persons acquainted with the habits of the plant, is an unusual occurrence. Three buds opened on Wednesday night, which remained in bloom Thursday, when, about noon, two other buds opened, making five flowers on the plant at one time. Probably the smallest baby in Indiana is Twannette Lorene, known as the “live doll,’’ daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Foster Thomas, of Portland, which at an age of a little over seven weeks weighs only four and a half pounds. At birth, August 27th, the little girl weighed five pounds. Two weeks later it was found its weight had decreased until it barely tipped the scales at three and a half pounds. Since then she has gained a pound. The reason girls always follow their mother’s advice about men is they say they do, especially when it isn’t true.
