C. L. BADER DEFENDED BY WINAMAC NEWSPAPER.

Says His Arrest Is Due To Refusal To Pool Interests With Other Bridge Building Companies. Anent the finding of an indictment by the recent grand jury against C. L. Bader, of the Winamac Bridge Co., for presenting an alleged fraudulent claim for the construction of a bridge across the Howe ditch, in the Harvey Wood neighborhood, the Winamac Republican comes to Mr. Bader’s defense in the following editorial: C. L. Bader the hustling business manager of the Winamac Bridge company, and one of Winamac’s most desirable, upright, and representative citizens, is having a novel experience much like that of the editor of the Winamac Republican a few years ago. Because the Winamac Bridge company refuses to .pool its interests with the old bridge concerns which in past years have robbed Pulaski and other counties of thousands of dollars in the way of exhorbitant charges, the Winamac company has' been getting much new business on every hand, and has reduced the expense to the public of building bridges. Some of the old companies are jealous, and one bridge competitor is so sore, and of so dispicable and little a nature that he has had Mr. Bader arrested on a criminal charge, and threatens to send him to the penitentiary because as he claims a bridge built by the Winamac company in Jasper county is not in full accord with the specifications. The jealous rival raised a rumpus about this particular bridge some months ago, before the bill was paid. The commissioners of Jasper county, and the newspapers there were at first concerned over the charges and a careful investigation was made resulted in the paying of the bill and the exoneration of Mr. Bader and the Winamac company of any attempt to defraud. In fact the commissioners expressed themselves as not only satisfied, but pleased with the job. But the jealous rival bridge builder is still sore, and so Mr. Bader is now made defendant in a spite suit, started to annoy him and his company and for the purpose of discrediting them. The suit is off the same cloth as that started a few years ago when Jo Gorrell hired Jack Hay (an irresponsible character now dead) to file a spite suit against the Republican editor, and then telegraphed all over the country that the Republican editor was arrested and would probably go to the penitentiary for tax dodging. • These smut guns are always more dangerous at the breech than at the muzzle. The world has no use for the slander-monger, and the sorehead. A man who goes about bragging that he is going to send this or that man to the penitentiary, simply stamps himself as a small-calibre ass, and even the children of a community regard such a disturber as a dangerous type of undesirable citizen.
