THREE GOOD MEN ARE a NOMINATED FOR COUNCIL.
Geo. W. Hopkins in First, D. E. Grow In Second and *Frank D. Kresler In the Third. Three well attended conventions were held in the court house Tuesday night for the purpose of nominating republicans, for the office of city council. The conventions were soon through with their work, with the re-sit-t that George W. Hopkins, the drug clerk, was nominated in the first ward; D. Elzie Grow, weighmaster at the Babcock & Hopkins elevator, in the second, and Frank G. Kresler, the bus line owner, in the third. C. J. Dean and Hopkins and Dr. H. L. Brown were placed in nomination in the first, but Dr. Brown withdrew, and Hopkins defeated Dean by two votes. Grow had no opposition in the second, but in the third the names of Kresler and Fred Tyler were proposed and Kresler received the nomination. Every voter seemed to have uppermost in his mind the desire to name men of business tact and unquestioned fairness and to nominate a ticket that will commend itself to the tax payers of the city. While the candidates are all young men, they have all lived in or near Rensselaer all their lives and are men who have demonstrated their ability to successfully manage their own affairs, and who have good ideas and are men of enterprise and progress.
Tonight the convention will be held that will nominate a mayor, clerk, treasurer and two councilmen at large. For mayor the contest seems to have become four cornered, with Walter V. Porter, Mayor Ellis, Geo. F. Meyers and George Fate as the candidates. Mr. Porter has not yet returned from the west, and his campaign is being engineered' by his friends who have the assurance, it is understood, that he will accept the nomination if it is given to him. Mr. Meyers has also signified his willingness to make the race if nominated. Mayor Ellis has never cared to engage in a contest for the nomination, but feels a commendable pride in the accomplishments of the council during his three terms of office and has signified his willingness to again become the candidate if the republicans wish to place him in nomination. George Fate has been a resident of Rensselaer but a few months, but he resided in the country for some time and has the natural style and good fellowship, coupled with much ability that will commend him to many voters. His campaign is in the hands of some of the younger voters. The names of C. G. Spitler, Dr. H. L. Brown, G. F. Meyers, J. F. Irwin, Fred Tyler and Dr. A. G. Catt have been mentioned as candidates for councilmen at large. Any two of them will help complete a fine ticket. Republicans should not let anything keep them away from the convention which will be 'held in the east court room tonight.
