The fine beginning made by the republicanis in the nominating of a city ticket when they selected Hopkins, Grow and Kresler for their ward candidates Tuesday night was followed with the nomination of an ideal ticket Wednesday night, which was headed by the nomination of Geo. F. Meyers for mayor. The convention was attended by 133 republicans and there was sufficient rivalry to make the contest interesting. For mayor the names of Walter V. Porter, George F. Meyers and James H. S. Ellis were proposed and Mr. Meyers was chosen as the nominee on the first ballott, which resulted as follows: Geo. F. Meyers 79 W. V. Porter 35 J. H. S. Ellis 14 . , 1. 128 Chas. Morlan, the present city clerk, had no opposition, his nomination being made by acclamation. For treasurer Ray D. Thompson was also unanimously, nominated. The main contest came in the selection of councilmen at large. It was agreed to nominate one at a time, and after four ballots Chas. J. Dean was declared the .nominee, the votes being as follows: Ist 2nd 3rd 4th C. J. Dean. . ...... 34 42 49 68 Dr. A. G. Catt 43 42 47 47 W. V. Porter 35 35 29 18 J. F. Irwin 18 8 130 127 125 133 Names were again placed before the convention and Dr. A. G. Catt was nominated on the second ballot. R. A. Parkinson withdrew his name after the first ballot. The ballots were as follows: Ist 2nd Dr. A. G. Catt 59 80 W. V. Porter 29 38 R. A. Parkison 26 6 Sylvester Gray. 10 7 S. R. Nichols., 2 *i 124 133 The meeting was organized by the selection of the officers of the city central committee as the officers of the convention, S. C. Irwin being chairman and C. C. Warner secretary. On motion the chairman appointed a committee of three, consisting of Dr. H. J. Kannal, A. J. Harmon and John W. Tilton, to draft recommendations to the incoming council. They reported the following resolutions, which were passed without discussion: Mr. Chairman: Your committee on recommendations respectfully submit the following: Whereas, the republican voters of the City of Rensselaer, Indiana, in mass convention assembled, believe that the affairs of the City should be conducted in an economical and business like manner, recommend; First. That the salary of the Mayor should be fixed by ordinance in any sum not to exceed 1150.00 per year, and that the salary of each councilman be in like manner fixed in any, pum not to exceed $50.00 per year. Second. Tiiat the duties of the City Marshal be as they are now prescribed by the statutes of the State and in addition thereto that he be the city teamster, and that he be the Street Commissioner, performing his duties at all times, as provided by ordinances, under the direction of the Mayor. Respectfully submitted, H. J. KANNAL. A. J. HARMON, . J. W. TILTON. It would be hard to improve the ticket nominated by thb republicans. It is headed by a man of known qualities, whose citizenship in Rensselaer has caused every resident of the town to respect him, and whose high regard for the rights of the people and respect for the law have assured him the admiration of other good citizens and this nomination being unsolicited is a tribute of the people that they will undoubtedly augment by giving him a large majority at the polls. Mr. Meyers was made a councilman ten months ago, following the death of Jay W. Williams, who had succeeded John McColly, who died shortly after being elected a councilman at large. His -ready grasp of the business affairs of the city were what his business ability would assure and he can be relied upon-to meet every emergency that the chief executive of a city may encounter. Mr. Morlan is serving bls third term as city clerk and his name was placed before the convention by City Attorney Williams, who has reason to know how well Mr. Morlan has ad-
ministered his office, and his central location makes him the very best man that could be secured. He is accurate, punctilious and understands the affairs of the city. Present City Treasurer Moses Leopold placed the name of Ray D. Thompson in nomination for treasurer. He is well qualified, centrally located and will make a good treasurer. The councilmen, with the exception of Mr. Dean, are all quite young men, with no previous experience with city administrations, but they are all ably managing their own affairs and are young men of business tact and integrity. Mr. Dean has previously served on the council, and is likewise a man of high business qualities and through dependability. It should be a pleasure to the voters of Rensselaer to Indorse the action of the republican convention at the election in November, and the administration which will ensue will be one of the best the city ever had.
