Augustus Phillips Compelled To Give Up California Engagement.

Augustus Phillips found it Impossible to overcome a severe cold, which he contracted shortly after beginning his engagement at the Alcazar theatre in San Francisco, and which so affected his voice as to make it almost impossible for him to talk and he finally decided on the advice of physicians to give up his work there and return to New York, which he has done. As to just what his next engagement will be is not known here, but he will probably place himself under the care of a New York specialist and assure himself of no permanent ailment before undertaking further work. His popularity in New York City, where he was for so many years, will assure him a first-class engagement whenever he feels able to undertake it again. His withdrawl from San Francisco was a great disappointment to him, as he was being so well received there, and he wrote his brother Fred here that his affliction was a great disappointment to him, but his physician could not promise, him relief as long as he remained there, and urged upon him the necessity of returning to the east.
