BIG SHOW IS BEGUN WITH FAVORABLE OUTLOOK.
Indications Are For Clear Weather and the Entries Indicate That the Show Will Be a Success. The horse show opened this Thursday morning and will be in full blast Friday and Saturday. The Wolcott band is here and its music is undobutedly the best ever played in ReffsseIder, and it would be a good show all by itself if there were no other attractions. They are not stingy players. Rensselaer is paying them S2OO for the three days and they want to earn their money and they have started the show by playing a number of fine selections on Washington street and they will be on the job early and late until the show breaks up Saturday night. The merry-go-round occupies the center of Cullen street east of the court house and near it is the big tent of the Congress of Living Curiosities. There are various forms* of street concessions and the city has quite a carnival appearance. All morning horses and colts have been coming in and there are now some thirty-five entries under cover. Some of the colts are very fine and that part of the show will be a very attractive feature. Several of the driving and exhibition events are being pulled off today, and J. F. McDoel and John P. Priest, both well known horsemen and both connected with the Monon railroad, are acting as judges in today’s events. Tomorrow and Saturday Claud Madden, of Kingman, Ind., will be -the judge. The balloon ascension will be made from Milroy park at 4 o’clock. Tonight the attractions consist of the band concert, Princess moving picture theatre, vaudeville at Ellis theatre and the tent show. The ball game between the Wrens and Medaryville is being played as the Republican goes to press. The prizes awarded up to 2 o’clock were: Best road stallion, standard bred, W. F. Smith, first with Fortell; June Hinkle, second with Gazam; Louis Muster; third with Buff Kip. For the best road mare. A. L. Padgitt first with lone Taylor; John Kolhoff second with Energy. For the best road mare or gelding. Same awards. For the best driving colts under 9 months old. Chauncy Wood first with X-Ray colt; Ed Tanner second with Buff Kip colt; John Martindale third with X-Ray colt. Stuffed club contest was won by Allen Swim, who waded right into the middle of a bunch of eight and landed on the ham with the third swing.
