Walter Wellman, the Record-Herald newspaper correspondent, who has been blustering considerably for the past three years about his plans for discovering the north pole, made another unsuccessful dash last Saturday. His balloon went some 25 or 30 miles, according to Walter’s estimate, when the ropes that held the provision bag broke and the balloon took an upward shoot that was very threatening. Walter and his daring crew hustled back to land, and had no sooner lashed the balloon to their ship than a broadside jerked it loose and busted all the steering gear, and stopped about everything in Iceland but Walter’s lead pencil, which tore off a sensational article for his newspaper. Walter seems to be a great frost as a north pole explorer, and should devote his talents to some different line. Gov. John A. Johnson, of Minnesota will enter a Minneapolis hospital early in September for a fourth operation for appendicitis. At the Aurora (Ill.) chatauqua last week Governor Johnson was ill. but none of his hearers realized it. “I will never again get as close to the presidency as I did last year,” he said. “My psychological moment has come and gone."
