NEW PRISONER AT THE COUNTY JAIL.
Fred Brown, Once Prosperous Goodland Restauranteur, Arrested As Horse Thief at ■vr"* ' Danville. Shortly after noon today, Wednesday, Deputy Sheriff Nelson Zumbaugh, of Newton county, arrived in Rensselaer, having in his custody a young “man named Fred Brown, and who formerly lived in Goodland, where he was quite successful in the restaurant business, it is alleged, until he began to take frequent trips to Chicago and Indianapolis. Brown is charged with the theft of the horse and buggy which were stolen last Saturday evening from the hitch rack at Kentland, and which belonged to a farm hand named Oliver Wood. Descriptions were sent out at once from Kentland, and one of them came into the possession of the deputy sheriff at Danville, 111., who accidentally found the rig at Ridge Farm, near Danville, while in pursuit of another stolen outfit. Brown 1b alleged to have been intoxicated, and is said to have tried to sell the rig valued at $l6O for S4O to a livery stable man at Ridge Farm. He first gave his name as John Brown but later gave his correct name. He claims that he purchased the outfit for $46 of strangers near Danville. Brown waived the formality of a requisition and accompanied Deputy Sheriff Zumbaugh, who went after him, back to this state without any objection. He also waived a preliminary hearing and was brought here * for safe keplng. Hi# pockets were searched, and two gold watches, one a man's and the other a ladies’, were found. The initials on the ladies’ watch were “M. B.” A number of good cigars, a nice card case and two small glasses were found. An address in the pocketbook was found, and Browq refused to tell whose it was or in what city it was located. On his way over here he coyly asked the deputy sheriff if a person could learn any trade they wanted to in the penitentiary.
