Silas Swain, of Morocco, is here on business today. * Simon Phillips received a telegram from his son, Qua, who made his first papearance as a theatrical star in San Francisco Monday evening. The telegram says: “Biggest hit I ever made. Fine newspaper notices. Am well and happy.” * A large number of motorcyclists are making the trip from Chicago to Indianapolis to be in readiness for the races there and also as a matter of an endurance test. As Rensselaer is on the direct route they are all passing through here. Consternation was created yesterday among merchants and saloonkeepers of Michigan City, when 54 warrants for the arrest of saloonkeepers for selling liquor last Sunday were issued by Justice Grover, of Laporte, at the instigation of Prosecutor Smith. Evidence was obtained by a new law and order league. Prosecutor Smith declares that the “lid” will go on Michigan City.
William M. Becker, of Milroy township, the insane man who was placed in jail here a few days ago, became violent this afternoon and imagines some one is trying to kidnap him. He was visited today by his brothers and when they attempted to leave the cell he tried to follow, and when restrained by the sheriff became violent and made a hard fight for his liberty. His cries since has kept the neighborhood in the vicinity of the jail in a turmoil. The Postofflce Department has issued a fraud order against Benjamin F. Bye, of Indianapolis. According to the inspector’s report Bye advertised to cure cancer through the mails. He also had as a side line “combination oil cure,” with treatment by soothing oils. An analysis of the doctor’s oils that “cure cancers and tumors to stay cured,” is said to have shown that they consist of cotton seed oil and some ordinary tonic. Many complaints have been received at the department charging Bye with fraud. Quart Mason jars peanut butter 35 cents at the Home Grocery.
