All railroads in the Pittsburg district are handling more than 90 per cent as much tonnage as they did in 1907, on account of the increased facilities installed during the last two years. About fifty guests were present, who participated in an “old time school.” Dinner buckets containing sandwiches were furnished the guests, and cake, ice cream and coffee were served on the side. A delightful time was had by all present. The Mell Dramatic Company, which held the boards here for a week not. long ago, went broke at Monon by the manager decamping with the funds. The creditors included the hotel and some of the local merchants, and they brought attachment proceedings to collect their claims, amounting to about S6O. A compromise was reached, some of the traps sold and most of the claims settled, but the company is no more.

There is a well authenticated report that James Wilson, of lowa, secretary of agriculture, will retire from office in December and- that Charles Frederick Scott, representative in congress from the second district of Kansas, will succeed him. No confirmation of the rumor can be obtained from either the secretary of agriculture or Mr. Scott. Frank L. Hunt, the Lowell druggist, in writing to pay for a grand stand ad, has the following to say in reference to the auto races held there last week: “People here are very much pleased over the success of the auto races. Some -lost money in different ventures, but all agree that the experience is worth the money and the people generally, including farmers, will welcome another event of the kind at any future time, but in the event that another race be promoted the people around the course will know the better bow-the provide for the comfort of visitors cause them to come and spend a few hours of pleasure with the people of Lake count*.”
