Two of the prettiest gifts we have seen in many a day called at the Republican office last evening in search of Lesley Miller, former editor of the Mt. Ayr Pilot. When told tfet Lesley was no longer working here they seemed greatly disappointed. Lesley is indeed a fortunate young man if he can annex such an attractive bunch of humanity as these young ladies. They reminded the writer of two nice little rosy peaches, just picked from the tree. Oh, that we were young and single again. John King claims to have the best garden in Jasper county, * not excepting the Fair Oaks party who some time ago made similar claims. He has tomatoes growfng in his garden, some of which will weigh a pound. He has cabbage as large as two fists, the heads being from two to five inches across. He had his first mess of new potatoes yesterday and they were as large as turkey eggs. His sweet corn is from three to four feet in height. John knows how to garden and stands ready to meet all comers. First Lieut. True Woodworth, Sergt. Major Vaughn Woodworth, Sergt. John Gangloff, privates Robinson, Warren and Garland returned from Columbia City last evening, where they had been participating in the battalion riue practice. Gangloff made the highest record of the home team on five ranges making 168 points out of a possible 250. Garland made 146; True Woodworth 143; Vaughn Woodworth 9j>; Robinson 93. Warren took sick and did not finish the shoot. The highest record was made by Lieut. Black, of Albion, who made 196 out of 250 points. Garland, True Woodworth and Gangloff made the battalion team, and will go to Indianapolis with twelve others early in July to take part In the state contest. The weather was ideal for the shoot and the boys were given royal treatment. They were given quarters In a vacant farm house and were not compelled to camp out during the rainy weather.
