What Will Be Done With the Little Shreeves Girl?
Truant Officer Steward and Officer Parks have been wondering what will be done with Ida Shreeves, the little girl whose small thefts came to light a few days ago. Her mother secured money to repay Miss Rosa Culp and also C. B. Steward. It was found upon further investigation that Mr. Steward has lost about $6, but he settled for $5. Other small thefts have also been reported. Among other things that the little girl purchased with her ill gotten money was a pair of nose glasses for which she paid $2.50. These, it is said, she did not in the least need, but just bought in order to look “pretty” when she attended the shows. The nonchalant indifference exhibited by the girl indicates that her mania for taking other people’s property needs severer correction than simply causing the parents to return the stolen money, and it is probable that the girls’ reform school woyld be the very best place for -her. Her frequency of the streets is certain to prove detrimental to her moral training and the influences of the girls’ correction school would go a long way toward educating the girl and rescuing her. B. F. Ferguson was the juvenile officer, and there is none in his absence, and Truant Officer Steward decided to take no steps in the case until Judge Hanley, who is in Kentland, returns and appoints a juvenile judge.
