WRENS PROVE TO BE IN POOR FORM.
Defeat Mt. Ayr by Score of 8 to 7 But she Game is Slow and Many Errors Are Made. The second appearance of the Wrens did not create as much enthusiasm as the first one, and the Sunday game with Mt. Ayr was a rather poor exhibition of the national pastime. The day was very hot, and from the outset the game seemed to be slow and there were errors of almost inexcusable kinds, owing to lack of practice together. The errors on the score book show that Rensselaer made six errors, but that does not tell the full story of misplays, for there were some times two or three bobbles heaped all in a pile that gave the affair a very poor and amateurish appearance. It seemed a foregone conclusion from the start that the home team would defeat its opponents and this feeling seemed to cause the Wrens to feel a little careless, and it is probable that with stiffer opponents the birds would have put up a decidedly better contest. The visitors made some blunders on their own part and their misplays were more expensive than the ones made by the Wrens, for the summary shows several reasons why they should have won the game. ML Ayr made 10 hits, and the Wrens but 6; Mt. Ayr had 5 errors and the Wrens had 6. Each pitcher hit four batters with thrown balls and a spectator was struck on the head by a batted ball. In addition to these things the game was very slow at all times and almost devoid of sensational plays. McGurran enlivened the game by some really good base running, Myers did the same thing and Morgan also got around the bases once by using his speed. But the coaching along the base lines was poor and there were three or four bad cases of base running. McGurran and Nageleisen worked fine as a battery, striking out 15 men and Nageleisen had four assists, so that he figured in 19 of the 27 put outs. If the support had been guilt edged Rensselaer should have had a shut out and McGurron would have won the best game of ball almost ever pitched here, but along with the errors came a few hits that better fielding should have turned into outs. Hanks will probably be here by next Sunday, when the Wrens are apt to take on the Morocco team unless they should decide to go to Brook for a return game with that aggregation. The summary:
