GOVERNOR SETS MONDAY, MAY 31, AS MEMORIAL DAY.
Proclamation Calls for Genuine Outpouring of People’s Love for Men Who Saved Nation. Monday, May 31, was formally set aside as Memorial day In Indiana by a proclamation issued by Governor Marshall yesterday. May 30. The usual date for the observance, falls on Sunday this year, and for this reason Monday will be observed. The proclamation, in part, follows: “The custom of once each year strewing the graves of the dead heroes, and speaking some word of gratitudejind good cheer to the living, is one that must commend itself to every patriotic American. We have had enough of words; let us have this year, a genuine outpouring of the people’s love in memory of the men who saved the Union. For such purpose, I, Thomas R. Marshall. Governor of the state of Indiana, do hereby designate and set apart Monday, MaySi, 1909, as Memorial day, and do proclaim the same a legal holiday throughout the state.- Let this bo, indeed, a holy day, when tears for the dead and cheers for the living will convince the boys in blue that those who died gloriously, and those who live have not lived in vain.”
