Thomas Re-elected Nightwatch; C. B. Steward Elected Fire Warden.
At the city council meeting Monday evening a nightwatch and fire warden were elected. There were three candidates for the nightwatch Job, E. M. Thomas, the present nightwatch, Lyman Zea and Alva Simpaon. Thomas got 3 votes and Zea and Simpson one each. C. B. Steward was elected fire warden by a. vote of 3 to 2, J. J. Montgomery, the present fire warden, being defeated. The street committee was authorized to investigate and ascertain the cost and manner of making certain
street repairs. The city treasurer’s report shows the following balances in the cit; treasury: Road fund, $365.70; water, $428.41; corporation, $177.78; light, $3,949.52. L. C. Klosterman was appointed city engineer to serve until January 1, Islo.
The members of the fire department were allowed $1.50 each for attendance at the Snyder fire and $1 each for attendance at the Montgomery fire. J. W. The Gary mills are turning out an average of 4,000 tons of rails a day.
Landis Booms Marshall.
In an interview at Washington, D. C., former Representative Charles B. Landis said that the democrats of Indiana will capture the next democratic nomination for the presidency if they will exercise the proper degree of tact and common sense. “If the democrats of Indiana wisely and judiciously look after Tom Marshall’s career,” said tie, “they will have the honor of presenting to the nation the next candidate of their party for the presidency. I have traveled jp. good deal and I think I know the strength of the Marshall sentiment and its possibilities of development. Governor Marshall is adroit and clever enough to do his part toward winning the nomination and if the members of his party in Indiana give him the assistance that is-necessary in a matter of that kind he can tie nominated. “Bryan,” added Mr. Landis, “has made tiis last race. Harmon has been in politics long enough to be regarded as a chestnut. Marshall conies to the front, an absolutely new quantity., He offers to the democracy’the spice and freshness absolutely essential to a democratic candidate and can point to one of ttie most notable victories ever won in a state campaign.”

Pitchfork Tillman Attends A White House Dinner.
Senator Tillman, of South Carolina, is again on the dinner list of the White House, after having been deprived of this honor for-several years past. Tuesday night, together with Mrs. Tillman, he was “among those present” at the hospitable Taft table. In 1902, Senator Tillman was lnvitey by President Roosevelt to the White House in honor of Prince Henry of Prussia, but the invitation was withdrawn after the pitchfork statesman had a fist fight on the floor of the Senate with his colleague, McLaurin. Mr. Tillman never visited the White House again until several weeks ago, when he called to pay his respects to President Taft, saying he had been waiting all these years until he could meet “a gentleman in the White House. ‘ The contract for the construction of the new postofflce building in Michigan City was awarded to the Interstate Construction company of Saginaw, Mich. Its bid was $42,990. The Larson-Danielson Construction company, of Laporte, was among the bidders.
