Mrs. Frank KCnnal returned to Lafayette yesterday, after a short visit here with Jier sister, Mrs. C. Kellner. Rice Porter’s baby, which was quite ill for some time, Is now very much Improved and will probably get entirely well. Mrs. M. E. Corliss and little grandson returned yesterday evening from Kankakee, 111,, where they have been for the past two weeks. Freeman Wood and wife returned this morning from a visit of ten days at various points in the central and eastern parts of the state. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Washburn came over from Goodland today and Mrs. Washburn will remain for a visit of a few days, while he returned home this afternoon. Robert Lawrie, the surveyor, of Monticello, accompanied C. H. Sternberg, the contractor, here this morning, and will dp some engineerihg work on the upper Iroquoik Miss Nellie Smith, formerly well known In this city, came yesterday evening for a short visit with Miss Gertrude Hopkins. She has been living in Indianapolis for,the past year but came here from Chicago where she had been visiting. Mrs. S. S. Barnes returned to Fowler this morning, after a short visit here with her father, Simon Phillips, and other members of the Phillips family. Her husband is now in Canada looking after interests he has there. Chas. Parker and wife and twin babies spent Saturday and Sunday with his mother, Mrs. Isabel Parker and family, In Frankfort. Jim Parker and wife expect to leave next Tuesday for Seattle, Wash., with the expectation of making that city their future home. \ Mrs. John Mohler, who was adjudged insane about a week ago, was taken to Longcliffe this morning. She was accompanied by her husband, Sheriff and Mrs: Shirer and Mrs. Jesse Nichols. She is not at all violent, and it is quite probable the treatment at the asylum may restore her mind.
There is some exceptionally fine wheat in Jasper county this year. Several farmers report that they never saw wheat look so well. It is now a foot to 15 inches in height and a heavy luxuriant growth. If the crop proves a success there will be many oats fields sowed in wheat in Jasper county this fall. Mrs. Julia A. Jessup, mother of Lee Jessup, who recently moved here from Ohio, has 'purchased the Shay property in the east part of town from George Worden, the administrator, and after making some extensive repairs to it, expects to occupy it as a residence. Her son and daughter will live with her. James Kirby Risk, who has been considerable of a laughing stock with local and tenth district democrats for some time, is said to have arranged with Governor Marshall to take charge of the reorganization of the democratic party in Indiana. Kirby must have made some great air castles for the governor, a construction at which he is particularly adept. “Uncle” John Makeever has been sick for several days and not able to leave bis apartments in the Makeever house. Today, however, he is somewhat better and made a trip to his bank. His suffering has been largely a pain in his back, and he has evidently not entirely recovered from the injuries sustained several months ago when he was thrown out of his buggy. It did not take Dan Waymtre long to learn to operate his new Ford runabout, and Sunday be run it up into Barkley township and Monday made a trip by himself to DeMotte, and today he expects to go to Hebron. His car is one of the handsomest runabouts that has ever come to Rensselaer, has the left side steering gear and is equipped with glass front and top over the front seat. It is a well proportioned and nice running car.
Leonard Elder will go to Chicago Saturday and Leland Jessen, Norman Gorham and Riley Tullis will go to Indianapolis to take the examination for railway mail clerk. The boys have been studying hard for several months and all should be able to pass the test, and thus add to the great number of railway mail clerks this town and county has supplied within the past few years.
Nightwatch Thomas arrested a drunk Saturday night and lodged him in jail. He gave- the of Chas. Woods, of Logansport. Sunday afternoon when arranged before Squire Irwin he gave the name of Chas. Maddox, and it is not known which, if either, was right. In the absence of a prosecuting attorney he gat off light, his fine and costs amounting to only $5.60. He has been ditching for Ben O’Conner.
E. M. Rawlings and Miss Myrtle Robley were married at the home of the bride’s parents in Fon du Lac, Wisc6nsin, last Thursday and arrived here yesterday afternoon. They have rented the little cottage recently vacated by Frank Nipple on Dewey street, second door north of Marion and will commence housekeeping as soon as they can get their house fitted up. Mr. Rawlings has a large circle of warm friends here who most cordially welcome him and his estimable bride to this town.—Monticello Journal. After having constructed an ingenious device by which he sought to slay marauders at his chicken coop, Schuyler Holley, 36 years old, Sunday fell a victim to his own death trap, and was instantly killed when the apparatus was set off. The trap consisted of an old muzzle loading “horse”pistol, which he arranged in a fixed position with the muzzle directed at the door. By means of a string the load would he discharged directly at the door. No one was near when Holley was shot, but neighbors heard the report of the pistol and investigated. Holley was lying In the doorway, dead. It is supposed that he had ■% forgoten about the trap.

Dave Spriggs was a Rensselaer goer Saturday. Ed Oliver returned Wednesday evening from a trip down south. Miss Mary Rees spent Sunday with Misses Lola Oliver and Lizzie Tow. Miss Letha Rees spent Sunday afternoon with Miss Zella Bowen. Ed Oliver sold 40 head of cattle to Oscar Moore Saturday. Sam Bowen has the mumps at this writing. Mrs. Ed Oliver is on the sick list at present. Ed Oliver was a Rensselaer caller Monday. The dafice at Wm. Rees’ was well attended Saturday night. All had an enjoyable time. Mr. and Mrs. E. Kennedy and family spent Friday afternoon with their son, Wm. Kennedy, and family. S. and Mrs. Spriggs, of near the oil fields, called on his son, Dave Snriggs, and family. . Mrs. T. M. Callahan and Miss Leatha Rees were shopping in Rensselaer Wednesday. Miss Lizzie Tow, of. near Wolcott, is spending a few days with Miss Lola Oliver. Ed Oliver and Wm. Rees took 4( cows to pasture in about six miles of Wheatfleld Sunday. Claude Boman spent Saturday night and Sunday with his uncle, E. Kennedy, and family. Louise and Edle Houser took dinner with their aunt, Mrs. Ed Oliver, Tuesday. The former live near Wheatfleld. Mrs. John Holladay and children returned Saturday from Kersey, where she has been cooking for her husband, who is baling hay there. Lola went down south Thursday to see if Floyd didn’t have a sister that was better looking than he was, as she had looked at him so long he had become ugly to her notion.
