U. S. S. New Hampshire Broke World’s Record.
Emerson Coen, son of Mr, and Mrs. W. S. Coen, Is back at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after participating with his battle ship, the New Hampshire, in the preliminary gun competition. The guns of the New Hampshire were third in the practice, but the gun with which Emerson works, broke the world’s record, making sixteen straight hits at a target in 2 minutes and 44 seconds. The main match takes place in September and SBSO is awarded to the ships crew that makes the best record and the New Hampshire is after it. As the N. H. was returning from the practice they steamed alongside the U. S. S. Idaho, which they had defeated in the preliminary, and the N. H. band played “Johnnie get your gun,” roasting them for their defeat. To this musica’ sally the Idaho responded with the tune, “What the hell do we care.” Emerson is delighted with his navy experiences and not at all homesick. His ship will probably make a trip to Germany this summer.
