Republican Given the Keys As State House Custodian.

The official keys of the State House were turned over at noon Thursday, to Charles J. Wheeler, of Noblesville, named for the place of custodian by Secretary of State Sims and Auditor of State Billhelmer, as members of a board which, they claim, has the ap~ pointing power. The keys were transferred by retiring custodian Otway A. Baker, who introduced Wheeler to the custodian’s force. Mr. Baker expected interference with his plans by attorneys for Thomas F. Colbert, named for the place by Governor Marshall, but no demand was made on him by them for the keys. He waited until 12 o’clock for the appearance of the contending forces, then called in the subordinates of the department to witness Wheeler’s inauguration. Neither Colbert nor his attorneys came during the morning. Michael H. Cain, appointed chief engineer by Governor Marshall, spent some time in the office in the morning. Wheeler’s attorney has advised him that since no interference was made before he received the keys from Baker, suit to obtain possession of-the keys must be brought in Hamilton 2 rounty.wfiefeWheeler resides. |
