Does It Pay to Advertise Your Business!

A farmer who lives some ten or twelve miles from Rensselaer and only about three miles from another but smaller town became a subscriber not long ago to the Semi-Weekly Republican, and in conversation with him we learned a thing or two about the value of advertising. “I was formerly a subscriber for your paper,” he said, “but it was delinquent a few months when the postoffice department took a hand In the business and I could not see any reason why they should butt in, so I had my paper stopped. I will be frank with you, and admit that I quite lost without my paper, and so was my, wife and other members of the family. They used to watch the advertising and we made frequent trips to Rensselaer and took advantage of bargains offered by your merchants. We sold most of our small produce here too, but since we have not had the paper and have not known when there were any sales and have not been coming to Rensselaer. This is our first trip here for four months, and weare here this time because we had a big bill left at our home. My wife Insisted that we have the Republican again, and I guess we will get to Rensselaer oftener hereafter and will be well paid for coming." Thus, it may be seen that failure to' advertise causes great loss to the local merchants, for there are many, farmers living near other towns that would never come to Rensselaer except that the papers here advise them through the advertising columns of the opportunities -for trade advantages. Every merchant in Rensselaer should be represented in the columns of the newspaper all the itme. The circulation of the Republican is growing and extending to a wider circle all the time. By employing its columns the merchant can get a chance at business out of his realm. The advertiser was ever the successful merchant. !
