Encampment of Odd Fellows to Be Sued.
A damage suit which has attracted all the Odd Fellows of this and adjoining states, in which Charles Kassabaum, of Sheridan, asks >IO,OOO damages from the encampment branch of the order at that place, is to be tried in the Tipton circuit court at the beginning of the new term, having just been sent there on change of venue. Kassabaum, in his complaint, sets forth that while he was being initiated March 14 of last year, during some portion of the ceremony the flesh on hip left thigh was dangerously torn by the explosion alleged to have comt from an iron pipe used in the initiation. This pipe, it is asserted, was loaded with powder and paper and
was not properly handled. H. H. Wheeler was at Indianapolis the past week with a delegation from' the Chicago Automobile club to interview Governor Marshal in regard to securing a company of the state militia to patrol the course during the automobile races next June. While no definite promise was given by the Governor he Intimated that he was favorably inclined and the prospects are good towards getting his consent to the use of the state troops. While there is no law expressly providing that the military forces may be used for that purpose, it is a new situation tAat has never arisen before and one Which the law makers have never been asked to provide for. The race promoters propose to pay all the expenses of the militia and will provide all the cost of their services and entertainment while here. In the event that the Governor’s consent cannot be obtained It is likely that a company of the Illinois National Guards will be Imported.—Crown Point Star.
