Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 41, Number 53, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 19 March 1909 — MIAMI county JOINS THE “DRY” COLUMN. [ARTICLE]
MIAMI county JOINS THE “DRY” COLUMN.
City of Pern with 48 Saloons Voted Wet, But the County Vote Puts It In Dry Column. Another county voted dry Tuesday. It was Miami county, where the city of Peru is located, and the proposition was thrashed out- in a lively fashion. The saloons closed their doors Monday noon and kept them closed until after the election, so as not to be criticised by the temperance people, it was probably a diplomatic movement to create sympathy and had some effect in Peru, where the city voted “wet” by a majority of 714. The county outside the city voted “dry” however, by almost 1,800 and the saloons 43 in number, will be ousted as fast as the licenses t spire. The majority for temperance was 1,043. The following counties have already set dates for elections: Greene county, March 23; Benton county, March 23; Montgomery eo:.uty, March 23; Ohio county, March 24; Elkhart county, March 25; Jennings county, March 30; Bartholomew county, March 30; Vermilion county, March 30; Henry county, March 31; Blackford county, April 6; Cass county, April 6.
