Republican Has a New Mergenthaler

The Republican has purchased and yesterday received from New York a fine new Model No. 5, two-letter Mergenthaler linotype typesetting machine, and the same will be erected in the office as soon as an expert arrives from Chicago to do the work. This machine costs $3,500, together with all the extra fittings that accompany it, including not only nonpareil and brevier faces for newspaper work,- but also eleven point' matrices that will enable us to handle all kindsi of brief and book work; This machine is the most modern type casting machine in the world, and Is a great improvement over the Junior Mergenthaler which was purchased by the Journal office almost four years ago. The Junior wes a wonderful machine, but the needs of the Dally and Semi-Weekly Republican were so great that the standard machine was needed. The great machine with its human-like power make possible almost double the composition that this office] has heretofore been capable of turning out and will make the Republican office the best equipped printing plant in northern Indiana. - We have often expressed a desire to build up a great printing industry here in Rensselaer and to do this we must be able to get work from other places. An effort has been made to secure work in Chicago and has met with much encouragement If work can be secured that will justify both a day and a night force the proprietors of the Republican will be glad to arrange for it One of the pieces of new machinery in this office was installed last year. It is a Miehle printing press, one of the finest cvlinder job presses. The work of this office could be so arranged that this press could be put upon a job of work and run both day and night. Its possible product would be more than 25,000 impressions a day and we are now in shape to give our customers the benefit of thia splendid equipment and to turn out circular, catalog and book work equal to any office In the large cities. If any of our friends know of printing that can be secured or have friends that would consider price an object along with quality in printing they can confer a favor on both us and our new patrons by getting us together.
