A POSITIVE CWE 1 FOR INDIGESTION If you have Indigestion, your food ferments in the stomach and bowels. And all this trouble is caused by the food that doesn’t digest, but ferments and oftimes rots in the stomach' And fermentation is caused by the stomach not being strong enough and energetic enough to thoroughly mix the food with the digestive juices. Ducktf Are Easy to Raise and Make j ‘ Good Money. Ducks are more profitable than chicks, if we raise the right kind and give them the proper kind of feed. Duck raising has developed within the last 20 years into a flourishing industry. Prior to this the duck was not considered a profitable fowl to raise. Its flesh was not In favor, on account of its being obliged to pick up its living as best it could along creeks and marshes, living mostly upon fishes and water Insects, and of course this gave its flesh a strong fishy flavor, says the Indiana Farmer. But ducks will respond very rapidly when handled for a profit. They are very heavy feeders and will grow twice as fast as chicks. On account of the duck being without, a crop the food passes directly to the and consequently the food must be in a soft mushy state. Soft food, togetrer with grass and vegetables and animal food. Is their natural diet. Too much hard grain does not agree with these birds, and they will not thrive on it. To produce best results the food must be such as will be easily assimilated. From time of hatching to five days old the following mixture is all right: Crackers or bread crumbs and corn meal, equal parts; hard boiled eggs about 15 per cent; sand about 5 per cent; mix with water or milk and feed four times a day. From five to 20 days old feed wheat bran two parts, corn meal one part, beef scraps 5 per cent, sand 5 per cent, green food 10 per cent; mix with water and feed four times a day. The hours for feeding ducks are 6 a. m., 10 a. m., 2 p. m., and 6 p. m. The food of the duck is such as to require drink while eating. When feeding always replenish the wa’.etrough with pure fresh water, as a duck while feeding will take a few mouthfuls then go to the trough for a drink. The amount of feed varies as does their growth. The growth should be about one-half pound a week; then as It increases they require an additional quantity of food. Feed each meal what they will eat clean with a relish. It is better they should have not enough than to overfeed them. Houses for ducks are simple affairs; they have no furnishing whatever. A duck is differently constituted from a hen and must be cared for under different conditions. The hen needs drier, warmer surroundings. A duck does not mind the cold at all if she can keep her feet warm. Cold feet will affect a duck as a frozen comb does a hen, retarding laying and inducing ailments. Again, the duck cannot stand the amount of confinement in a house that a hen can, as she is more restless in disposition. Her ceasless mution aids the digestive organs and keeps her in good health. There is quite a number of different varieties of ducks. None stands higher in popular esteem on the farm than the White Pekin. They are easily raised and are considered among the best J for table use. They are very large, some reaching as high as 20 pounds a pair. When handled and fed properly ducks are quite profitable. On account of fewer diseases and not getting affected with vermin, they are more easily managed and more profitable than chickens.
Virgin Soil.
We often hear people speak of virgin soil as if that kind of a soil were superior to any other. To the soil robber it may be superior, because his whole process of farming consists in taking out of the soil as much of its fertility as possible and then passing on to another lot of virgin soil, says the Farmer’s Review. But as a matter of fact much of the virgin soil is very undesirable till it has been worked for some years, in which time the top soil will be turned under and furnish the lower layers of soli with some humus. The turning up of the soil lets the air into it, and this makes it possible for the bacteria to begin work. The work of tho bacteria is to change mineral matter into a form that can be used by the plants. Some virgin soil, such as the prairie soil, is already in a high state of adaptability, and this it is that has made the prairie states such prizes for the men that knew nothing more about soils than to take out of them all the plant food they could get. A soil that has been properly handled for any number of years 1b better than virgin soil, for it has had the wildness taken out of it by the plow and by cultivation, by the air and sunlight, and has hod Increased energy put into it by the microscopic life that has been given a chance to develop under the best of conditions. Do not put off the little task of cleaning out the weeds between the rows and in the fence corners, whether it be a field, a garden, a little grass plot or a walk or driveway. Those left will go to seed and as a stitch in time saves nine, so one year’s seeding makes seven years' weeding. A well matched team is a pleasure to handle add creates prtde in the farm and brings respect from ail who gee them. It will sell for a good price and advertises the farm ip a desirable manner. The effort required to obtain a well matched team will be well paiu for.
THE RELIGION OF SHAKESPEARE
He Believed in the Utmost Simplicity of the Catholic Faith.. All attempts to attach to Shakeapeare the label of this or that denomination, or form of faith within, or without, the Christian communion have. In a. certain sense, failed. It was not his business, we may even say it was not his policy—for policy in religion was a matter of some importance in the reign of Elizabeth —to declare his religious beliefs. In so far as he was a private individual his faith was his own business, while in so far as he was a dramatist his declarations of faith were a part /at his art. However, it is true enough to .say that the form and fashion of the old faith fascinated his nature in a way that was impossible with the reformed religion. When we read the plays it is impossible to believe that the age of the Reformation has come and gone. The faith of the Middle Ages inspires and pervades the plays to an extent and in a fashion that is due to deliberate preference. The formulas of holy church, oaths and phrases drawn from the creeds and gospels, are ever on the lips of his people. He shows a minute and intimate knowledge of the highly technical precepts of the old faith. No detail is wanting of church life, from the carrying of the “chrisom child" to “the bringing home of bell and burial.'” Holy church environed the creations of Shakespeare from the cradle to the grave. The Catholic position was, in fact, his position, though there is evidence that he did not recognize the papel authority. The introductory paragraph of Shakespeare’s will seems to give us a direct statement of his belief: “I commend my soul into the hands of God my Creator, hoping and assuredly believing, through the only merits of Jesus Christ my Savior, to be made partaker of life everlasting.’’ How does this noble commendation tally with the faith that peers through the plays as we watch Shakespeare’s great creatures live and move and have their wondrous being? The plays taken as a whole give.the reader certain definite impressions. We notice, for instance, a profound reticence on great religious issues that Is perfectly consistent with, indeed follows directly from, his Catholic position, and is not betrayed by his lavish use of religious material. The use of religious forms, he realized, is a fundamental fact in the lives of men and women. Therefore, the formal ism of religion permeates play after play. It is a part of the life of his age and is therefore part of the world that he creates. But the fundamental issues of which religion in fact treats are not brought into the foreground. One instance of Shakespeare’s reticence and his reverence for the old church is the fact that he never attacks the clergy or religious of that church, while he is always ready to smile at the Puritans. The church, moreover, is not the place either for religious polemics or for the treatment of sacred themes. Neither the mystery plays nor the moral plays come within Shakespeare’s vast range of creation, and this must have been the result of deliberate choice. —Contemporary Review.
Engineer Who Makes Time.
“They do not run trains so fast in England, because Jhe engineers know too much about their engines,” said an engineer who has run an engine in that country. “In England a man has to be a compentent machinist before he is allowed to run. “They say that the man who knows all about how an engine is put together, knows how delicate some of its parts are, knows how many dozen and one things there are liable to break at any minute, hasn’t the nerve to run one of them eighty or ninety miles an hour. “The best engineers are the ones who don’t know too much about their engine—just, know enough to locate a pounding in a cylinder box or how to Unhook her on one side if she breaks a driving rod or something that way. That’s a theory at any rate, and I believe it’s pretty nearly right.”—Columbus Dispatch.
Dollar Bills by Weight.
“Dollar bills are worth almost their weight in gold," a bank president said the other day to a depositor. “Yes, I suppose they come in handy for change and are easy to carry,” the depositor replied absently. “No, I was speaking literally,” the bank president said. "We got into an argument In the bank here the other day as to how much a dollar bill weighed. A S2O gold piece weighs 540 grains. We found that twentyseven crisp, new one dollar bills weigh the same aa a twenty dollar gold piece. We tested some bills that had been In use and found that It took but twenty-six of them to balance the gold piece. I suppose that twenty-six used bills gather an accumulation of dirt In passing from hand to hand that weighs about what one now bill does.—Kansas City Star.
