The State Legislature.
The democrats in the house and the - republicans in the senate ar» starting out to play considerable politics. The republicans seem thorough* ly harmonious and are bale to get , away with about everything in sight in the upper house. The democrat* managed ta_fijeet a speaker without serious conflict, choosing Thos. MV Honan, of Seymour, for speaker ot the house. The democrats sent their committedassignments through the house with-* out a hitch, and the republicans groin control of the senate appoint-* ments and the new democratic lien-* tenant governor is without much* powefr. Governor Hanly’s message was read to both houses this Friday morning: at 10 o’clock. The election contests which th# democrats have been pushing are being offset by several charges of fraud against the democrats and probably a great part of the session will bes given over to political scrapping, unless settled by compromise. The U. S. senatorial scrap is uppermost in the minds of the democrats, but was given a little resg Thursday by the absence of the principal candidates; John W. Kern and others being at Lafayette to attend the annual Jackson banquet. The inauguration of Thos. R. Marshall as governor will take place Monday and the legislature will probably adjourn tonight until Monday. ,
