The general merchandise store of . Jacob Koppelman, at DeMotte, was destroyed by fire last Friday night. The fire was discovered at about 1 o’clock Saturday nforning, and so entirely was the building enveloped in dames that efforts to save it or to save any of the contents were useless. Mr. Koppelman did an extensive business and carried a large stock. It is understood that the stock was insured for only about half of its value. The building was a two story frame, and on the second floor the Knights of Pythias lodge had its quarters. All the lodge belongings were destroyed toy fire. The origin of the fire is not known. Mr. Koppelman will probably build a store room and re-engage in business.

TRUSTEE FELDMAN DIED SATURDAY
Keener Township Trustee Unable To Withstand the Rigors of Typhoid - Pneumonia, Dies After Long Illness. Henry F. Feldman, trustee of Keener township, and a man quite well known in Rensselaer and over Jasper county, succumbed to the rigors of typhoid-pneumonia last Saturday evening. He had been sick for four or five weeks and feeling poorly before that time, but it was understood here that he whs getting better, and the news of his death was a great shock to his acquaintances and many friends in this city. Mr. Feldman was in Rensselaer at the November meeting of the board of trustees, and said at that time that he was not feeling at all well. He was taken to his bed soon after, and, as soon as his sickness waj diagnosed as typhoid fever, the services of a professional nurse were secured and every effort made to restore him to health. Pneumonia, it is thought, was a later complication and the tax on his strength was too great to withstand. Mr. Feldman was of German extraction and had become a well-to-do-farmer through his industrious labors. He resided northeast of DeMotte, where he owned a farm of about 200 acres. He was about 55 years of age and leaves a widow and five children, the youngest of whom is about 14 years of age. The funeral will be held at the residence Wednesday morning, Dec. 23, at 10 o’clock, and will be attended 1 toy County Superintendent Ernest Lamson, former County Superintendent, Louis Hamilton, and Miss Grace . Warren, the latter being a close friend of Miss Flossie Feldman, daughter of the deceased. Mr. Feldman would have completed his four year term of office on Dec. 31st, having been elected four years ago. His successor will be Tunis Snipp who was elected at the general election in November. Mr. Snipp was appointed this, Monday afternoon, by the Auditor to fill Mr. Feldman’s unexpired term.
H. Deam Pays Us a Visit.
H. Deam, representing the Chica-, go Industrial Co., with whom the Commercial Club made a contract for the sale of lots ,ip the subdivision to be platted to raise a factory fund, came down from Chicago Friday afternoon and remained here over night He conferred with the option committee on the purchase of property and also with the board di directors of the club. The coinmittee has "belayed action on the acquiring of property until it finds out whether the lots of one or two subdivisions already plotted are available at a reasonable price. It was deemed advisable not to undertake the sale during the holidays and therefore the committee has taken more time than it otherwise would in. the selection of property for the lots. If the matter can be closed up Monday the printing of the posters, for the advertising, and also of the sale contracts, will be done at once' and the sale commenced the first of January and carried through with a rush.
