County Option Being Tested.
( The anti-saloon league is planning a county option fight in fifteen counties. It will first be tried in Wabash, Lawrence and Whitley counties, and then in Pike, Wayne, Jay, Huntington, Marshall, Gibson, Hendricks, Fountain, Starke, Porter, Bartholomew and The petition for an election has already been filed in the three counties first named, and at Columbia City the liquor forces are opposing the filing of the petition on technical grounds. Columbia City has eleven saloons and no remonstrance effort was ever made there to rid the city of saloons. The most prominent man in the city is a brewer and he is also a very progressive man and quite popular and many who opposed his business did not like to do anything to injure him, and so the saloons have gone unmoisted. It is quite certain that the county would go dry when placed to a vote, and knowihg this the saloon interests are attacking the legality of the petition. Our former townsman, Arthur Nowels and family reside at Columbia City, where he is engaged in the lumber business. Charles W. Morse is credited with saying that if he had to choose between spending 15 years in France and 15 in jail, he would prefer jail. The Danube river was frozen over so that an army crossed it on the ice in the year 462.
