CHARACTER IN THE TONGUE.
Germany's Way of Sizing People Up Available Chiefly to Doctors. ' Germany has taken up the pastime Of reading character and telling fortunes by the tongue. Somebody has been making a study of the organ of speech and has discovered that it is full of indications. a* A long tongue is said to denote openness of character. It suggests generosity and free handedness. Us possessor makes friends and enemies easily but doesn’t save money. When the tongue is long and thick the openness degenerates into a tendency to gossip and scandal. The future of the owner is beset with troubles of his own making. It also indicates flightiness and inconstancy. Short tongues indicate secretiveness and dissimulation. Their owners make good detectives and attorneys. The owner may acquire some money by economy and guile but hus not largeness of spirit to make a great fortune. Thin pointed tongues are found in diflident people wh 0 do not succeed in lifeShort and broad ones accompany •raft and falsehood; the person who has such a tongue is compelled by it to deceive and betray, whatever effort he may make to keep straight. The vibrant, quavering tongue de~ notes the artistic temperament. Brilliant carmine hue is a sign of long life, pale pink tongue denotes weakness of character and delicacy of constitution. “If it's all true,” says a German newspaper, “it is lucky that it is only at the doctor and not at our friends that we stick out our tongues."
BUENOS AYRES.
It Is One of the Most Magnificent Cities in the World. Buenos Ayres is already one of the most magnificent cities in the world. Enormous sums hare been laid out in widening the streets and erecting splendid buildings. But apparently the Argentines are not yet content, for the Chamber has just authorized the raising of a new municipal loan of £3,000,000 “for the purpose of improving and embellishing the city.” This is probably due to jealousy ot Bio de Janeiro, for the Brazilians have recently spent a good deal of money in beautifying their capital, and the Buenos Ayrians are determined not to be beaten in the race of luxury.—London Globe.
President Diaz of Mexico.
President Diaz of Mexico, who is past 77, literally takes upon himself a very extensive portion of the administrative work of his Government- He Is an early riser, and his day is systematically. arranged. He never frets or worries over petty matters, and is always calm and in perfect mental poise in times of crisis and emergency.

DOLLAR AND THE PESO.
What a Dollar Means in Mexico Haa . Been Settled. The question in Mexico of what a “dollar” means has recently been authoritatively settled- The Department of Finance has decided that the word “dollar” shall mean the American gold dollar and that when the Mexican silver dollar is meant the word “peso” shall be employed. Sumeni timem ago an American r4s. ident at Tampico wrote “uQllar” on a check, and the Tampico bank cashier to whom the check was presented paid the amount in gold values, The drawer of the check claimed that it was his intention to have silver paid. Litigation was threatened, but upon investigation the authorities decided against the drawer of the checks The Mexican ruling applies to all documents, —notes, drafts, &c.
Trains—Siberian Railway.
The train on the Trans-Siberian railway are in general comfortable and sufficiently well kept. The food is quite sufficient. The speed is very slow, however, and the stops at stations long and tedious- In general, it is better for a foreigner not familiar with the Russian language to travel by the International trains, because the employes thereon in all cases speak either French, German or En. glish in addition to Russian and tae toilet arrangements on International trains are much superior to those .on the State railways.
The Expectation of Life.

At the same time, it still holds good that the average expectation of life has been lengthened during the past decades but‘it is only the younger Individuals who profit by this practical result ot the advances in medical knowledge.

Lost Their First Football Game.
The big athletes on the Rensselaer football team lost the'r first game of the season at Brbok Tuesday by the score of 5 to 4. The Rensselaer beys comp’aln that they were not treated fair ip decisions, alleging that tile Brook boys were not familiay with the pe sal y rules in the forward pass plays and also claiming that the crowd int rfered badly with the attempts to m:ke end runs whenever Rensselaer had possession of the ball. A Steady Drain.
SiCK KIDNEYS WEAKEN THE WHOLE BODY—MAKES YOU ILL LANGUID AND DEPRESSED. Sick kidneys weaken the body through the continual drainage of lifegiving, albumen from the blood into the urine, and the substitution of poisonous uric acid that goes broadcast through the system, sowing the seeds of disease. Loss of albumen causes weakness, languor, depres-lon. Uric poisoning causes rheumatic pain,, nervousness, nausea, cricks in the back gravel and kidney stones. The proper treatment is a kidney treatment, and the b#st remedy is Doan’s Kidney Pills. Mrs. John Britton, 311 Mill street, Goodland, Ind., says; “I suffered severely from backaches, sharp, shooting pains across my loins, also throbbing headaches. I was unable to sleep at night, and as a result, had no strength pr ambition to perform my household duties. My kidneys gave me great annoyonce by their frequent action and I felt tired and worn out all the time. I doctored but found no relief until I began to use Doan’s Kidney Pills. They acted as a tonic, giving me strength and ambition and benefitting me in every way. I also gave Doan’s Kidney Pills to my little girl who was troubled with a kidney weakness and they ho ped her after everything else had failed.’’ Plenty more proof like th s from Rensselaer people.
