M. Cushaw, of Frankfort, came in on the 9:55 and visited until 2:01 with Jerry Haley. J.‘ H. Karr left this morning for Mitchell, S. Dak., for a visit with relatives and to look at the country. R. B. Porter and wife left today for Mitchell, 8. Dak., for a visit with their daughter, Mrs. Will Clark, and family. J. H. 8. Ellis is taking down his show tent, which will be used in the democratic speaking at Roselawn Friday. Samuel Holmes and Chas. Greenlee, left tocjpy for Pleasant Hill, Tenn., where the former will visit with his parents and the latter with a sister. They will be gone about a month. The Lowell vs. Laporte.ball game at the latter place Sunday, resulted in a tie, the score being 2 to 2. Laporte thinks they were robbed of the game by the umpire. Geo. Long has gone to Wabash College where he will take a general course, making a specialty of chemistry. George was one of the high school graduates here last year. A Delphi butcher advertises that “beef steak has taken a fall in price along with the fall in cattle.*’ If such an action has been taken by the butchers here, they have not made the fact public. Mrs. W. F. Smith accompanied her guests, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Smith, to Chicago today, where they will visit their Sister, Mrs. E. 8. Parr.
Miss •Donna Harmon and Miss Sadie Caln returned to Chicago this morning, after a few days’ visit wi'h the former’s brothers, A. J. and L. A. Harmon.

The dredge resumed operations this morning after a two days’ shutdown. The lower bridge has been removed and the dredge is within 100 feet of the bridge. Unless mere blasting is required the dredge will be through and the bridge replaced within a few days. Today is Judge William H. Taft’s birthday, and early yesterday morning congratulations consisting of letters and postal cards began pouring in upon him at his home in Cincinnati. The day is being spent in quietude with his family, he discarding the most important business on this occasion. He was born Sept. 15, 1857, making him now 51 years old. The place of his birth is the same as- hts- pre®snr ciunatl. ?

Attorney General Bingham has rendered an opinion for the benefit of the Clinton county commissioners who hesitated about making preparations for the special elections. The opinion shows that the Jasper county board acted wisely in appointing inspectors. Any public officer falling to do his duty in the matter of elections shall be deemed qullty of a felony. The attorney further says: “In my opinion there is but one thing for the board to do and that is to follow the statute and perform all duties upon them, regard'ess of whether there be an appropriation for the specific purpose of the special election.”
