Great Records at Tournament
Fire Chief J. J. Montgomery was at Clinton, lowa, last week taking in the state Are tournament and reports a great time. He is so enthusiastic over the work done there that he will endeavor to get the consent of the city council to let the local fire department enter some of the contests at Clinton next year and try for some of the substantial cash prizes offered. At the Clinton contest some of the national and state records were broken. The Sioux City company broke the world’s record In the half mile run, making the run in one minute and fifteen seconds, chopping three-fifths of a second from the former record. In the state contest “Bonnie” and Beauty,” the Clinton fire company horses, were the winners, making the run in 1:03 2-6 seconds. In the hitching contest which included a run of 150 feet, the Sioux City and Davenporte team tied, their time being 10 seconds. The rules of the contest provided that the men be in their bunks on the second floor and at the sound of the gong slide to the ground, hitch and make the run.
