Double Rescue From Drowning
Monticello Herald: Geo. Ade and a party of friends from Kentland floated down the river from Winamac last week, arriving here Saturday in time to catch the 5 o’clock train for home. Besides Ade there were A. J. Thompson, Col. Roberts, Chas. Spinney, Harry Davis, H. L. Sammons, C. C. Kent, O. P. Keester, A. J. Schuh, Jas. Chancellor and Jas. Whittaker. They were accompanied by their Winmaac host, Mr. E. W. Smith, and thereby hangs a tale, The day before they arrived here one of the boats, containing Mr. Smith and Mr. Thompson, upset at a point where the river is about fifteen feet deep, and the boat being of steel went to the bottom, leaving the occupants floundering in the water without rudder, compass or life preservers. Smith, being a Winamackerel, could swim, but Thompson being from an inland town, would have drowned if his companion had not helped hinx When they got to where they could wade and Smith let go of his burden he was so exhausted that he collapsed and would have drowned in the shallow water if Thompson had not returned the compliment and helped him to shore. After both had recovered their wind they agreed that under certain circumstances combinations are a good thing.
