KERN NOMINATED BY ACCLAMATION
Hoosier of Indianapolis and Formerly of Kokomo Will be Mr. Bryan’s Running Mate.
The democratic national convention concluded its labors late Friday afternoon by thq nomination of John Worth Kern, of Indiana for vice president; completing the ticket on which W. J. Bryan was made nominee for president during the early hours of that morning. The. nomination of Kern was made by acclamation amid the cheers of delegates and spectators. No ballot was neceßsay, as the tidq of sentiment had set irresistibly toward the Indiana candidate. The convention, after adjourning at daylight with the nomination of Mr. Bryan, resumed its session at lp.m., with a powerful undercurrent already on toward the nomination of Kern for second place. On the call of states Indiana presented the name of Kern; Colorado, through former Governor Thomas, placed in nomination Charles A. Towne, of New York; Connecticut presented Archibald McNeill, and Georgia, Clark Howell. The name of
' Judge George Gray, of Delaware, sad 1 of John Mitchell, of Illinois, were not j presented, owing to positive requests of these gentlemen not to have their names go before the convention. For a time it looked as though a ballot would be required. But the steady line of states which joined in second* ing Kern’s nomination soon made it apparent that the chances of all other candidates had been extinguished. Mr. ! Towne in person was the first candidate to recognize the decisive nature of the Kern movement and withdrew his name. The withdrawal of the Con- ! necticut candidate was accompanied by a motion the nomination of Kern be made by acclamation. The action carried with a shout and th# assemblage broke into demonstration on the accomplishment of its work and the completion of the democratic national ticket. The nomination was made at 4: IS [o’clock and the convention that adjourned without delay.
