RENSSELAER WRENS LOSE AND WIN
Lose Fourth of July Game at Wolcott, but Win From Goodland Sunday.
*». W. L. P. C. Rensselaer. . 3 2 1 666 Wolcott advertised a grand band concert and a base ball game for her fourth of July celebration. They came near failing to show the last named article, and substituted a balloon ascension instead. The game was replete with thrillers on both sides, but the score itself tells a story more tersely than #ords. Dobbins started the slab-work for Rensselaer, and pitched good ball for six innings. In that time he struck out eight men and allowed but seven scratch hits. Swartzell, who succeeded him, struck out seven men and allowed two hits. In that time the socalled Wrens garnered 16 clean bingles, but it was no use. Manager Hammond, of the Wolcott aggregation, had had live meadow land scraped for an infield, and it looked fast, but the rain of the day before, had waterlogged the grounds so that the ball sizzed like a last year’s firecracker, and our boys failed to get their lunch hooks da the sphere in time to nab the runner. Under ordinary conditions we should have won hands down, but -the slow diamond .accounted for ten errors, which did the business. It is probable that these same teams will line up here in the near future, and we hope to retrieve our reputation. 123456789 r h e Rensselaer . . 0223130 0 I—l 2 16 10 Wolcott ~,23052041 o—l 7 & 5 NOTES OF THE GAME AT WOL-
COTT. Morgan at first failed to nab an error. None of the outfielders had a chance. The longest hit of the game netted only one bag. Ex-Mayor Louie Leopld led the rooting section, and accounted heavily on the final score (?) Aided by a partisan umpire, how could they help it? Umpire Joe Hammond, who also worked here Sunday, was at all times fair and impartial. Dobbins has many relatives In that man’s town and he was kidded some. Rensselaer was always there at the bat, but in the field we need practice and lots of it. Guess the substitute left "Holder wasn’t there.
The game Sunday at the college grounds, for awhile looked like it might be a repetition of the Wolcott doings. At the end of the fourth inning Goodland-Wadena had us on their wagon, the score being 6 to 0 In their favor. By that time some of ' our new men got wise to the game and the visitors had a row to hoe for the rest of the game. The boys had to fight up-hill to overcome the halfdozen lead, but in their half of the seventh they tied tbe score, and the
contest was drawn out for four more exciting rounds. At the end of the 9th the score was 8 and 8. Neither side scored in the tenth. In the eleventh, Champley, the head of the batting list for the visitors, fanned. ’ Kuboske next up, hit a high fly to left, which was muffed. Martin, the next man up, hit one to some place but it fell la a well. Kuboske stole second, but with two outs we breathed easier. Gravel, the next up, got the only two bagger that Goodland counted, and Kuboske scored. Valenski grounded to second, but Peck next up struck out Rensselaer’s half of this game was a thriller. Parcells first up got a clean two-bagger In left garden. Grant flew out to first, holding Parcells on second. Morgan next went out trying to bunt, Parcells stole third. McCarthy next up got the first sack on first baseman’s error, SwartI zell hit clean between first and second scoring Parcells. We had two men on bases and two outs, but the score was tied. Dobbins then got a clean double between second and third and McCarthy and Swartzell galloped home.

LAND. Dobbins And Swartzell struck out 15 men. Goodland had the good fortune to make the only double play, and it was a fast one. ' There was not a pass to first on either side. Sherm Park’s fielding was a feature. The kid is a comer, as he is some fast. Dobbins and Parcells got Renssedoubles, they came opportunely, laer’s doubles, they came opportunely, pinch hitter to maintain. Elmer Wilcox captured the first homer of the season. It was a low drive to deep right After the ball struck the tennis courts, it went so fast, that it came near being lost. Lots of practice will put the team in shape-to eope-wttlr~any' tgaaH~ I WS"TISvF scheduled. The boys hit well, and remember what we want is boosters not knockers. The team was well supported by the multitude in the final rounds, when the infield began to Bhow class. Bruce Hardy would make a gcod ye’l leader. Some people have lots of nerve when the score is 6 to 0 against. Either Wolcott or Brookston July 12th. The Y. M. I. team, City Champions of Lafayette, July 19th. Wheatfield, July 22d.
