ECONOMICAL INNOVATION.
Among the instances of alleged Re* publican extravagance in the' state administration quoted by "Bob” Miers In his keynote speech to the Democratic state convention, was the new office executive accountant. He was not working in the governor’s office iast year. A little error of Mr. Miers But he. Is at his desk there this year and his fixed yearly salary is $2,500 He is worth it and the taxpayers cf Indiana know it . Governor Hanlys words in reply to Miers are worth quoting again. Read them .and remember them: “The executive accountant is a part of the new system which has put an end to many long-standing abuses in the administration of state administrative oflices, and which resulted, as we all know, in peculation of public moneys, sequestration of fees and other misuses of public funds year after year, aggregating in twenty years S4B, 068.74 under one auditor, $74,569 under another, $49,616.45 under another, $13,511.57 under another. $154,896.78 under another; a total of $340,662.54. Had the office of executive accountant existed during the last twenty years he would have drawn $50,000 in salary, but his work would have saved the State $340,662.54, or a net of $290,662.64. Do they propose to strike down the appropriation for this officer and go back to the old system? If so, let them answer.”
THINGS DONE AND TO DO.
“Politics is no longer a matter of sentiment, but purely a matter of business.” That is one of the many truths uttered by Attorney General Bingham in his fine speech at. the Scott county convention. Some others of his saga clous sentences should have a state wide circulation. Read these: "The Republican party came into power in 1861 as the advocate of a great moral principle, which is now conceded by all to have been right. “From the time the Republican party came power in 1861 until this good hour', save and except during
four years of Democratic rest and a short Republican vacation this winter, onr industries have been diversified; we have all been busy, all prosperous and all happy. "In the midst of this panic wheat is Belling at nearly a dollar; corn, 75 to 80 cents; beef at $5.50 to $5.65; lambs at $5.25 to $5.50, and pork at $5.50. What does all this mean? It means that the policies of the Republican party during panics and unsettled business conditions are rights, and in the very midst of our panic we enjoy prosperity. It aiso means that the policies of the Democratic party under such conditions are wrong. In the language of Mr. Watson, the Republican nomi nee for governor, it means that a Republican panic is better than a Democratic boom. "If the Republican party is right, then what is there left for the Democratic party that always opposes except to be wrong? It was wrong in ’6l. It was wrong in '93, and I point to its record from ’93 to ’97 as proof of that fact. In 1896 William Jennings Bryan said it had been wrong; it was wrong in ’96. Every prophecy that was made by the new Democratic Moses of that campaign has proven false. In 1900 it was wrong. I can prove that by Alton B. Parker. It was wrong in 1904.
I can prove that by William Jennings Bryan. It will be wrong in 1908, for _its only platform will be .William Jennings Bryan. It has always been wrong in the past, and what has it to commend it for the future? * * * "But what of the Republican local option plank? Past experience has demonstrated by the operation of the blanket remonstrance law trat all the
townships of a county, and all the city wards of the cities of a county may be remonstrated dry, with the exception of one single city ward, within one single city, and that the liquor business in that particular city ward will be turned Into g gold mine and that particular city ward into a veritable cesspool of liquor business, thereby rendering the whole territory of the county practically wet territory, and thus defeat the will of the majority of the people. By the Republican local option plank in Its platform, the Republican party proposes and declares in favor of a law with the county as a unit, preserving and maintaining the blanket remonstrance law in all its vigor, with a view to enabling the voters of a county to settle the question once and for ,all for the entire county. So that if the townships of the county have voted to be dry the county seat, where the citizens congregate and the children are educated in the high schools, shall also be .dry, thereby making the entire county dry territory, and thus giving the will of the people its just and full force.” • • • And the hope may be expressed that when Senator Gore of Oklahoma recovers his physical eyesight even in part, as there is now gratifying assurance that he may, his political vision may be clearer to see the mental strabismus that is acute in his party and state.
The Republican party for twelve years has been Intrusted by Increasing majorities with the entire administration and control of the public affairs of our state. During this period the executive and judicial departments have enforced the laws justly and impartially, while the legislative department has enacted many important measures at the will and for the good of the people—Republican State Platform.
HOW VISITORS ARE FED
Where the Food Supplies Come From for Winona Lake Visitors. V
A BIG VEGETABLE GARDEN Twenty-Five Acres of Supplies Will Be Ready for the Hungry—Fruits and Groceries by Trolley Fresh From the Markets of Chicago. When thousands Of people flock to a summer resort, where they swim, fish, tramp in the woods, play golf and indulge In other outdoor life that develops hearty appetites, a task which confronts the management of the resort is how to supply food in sufficient quality and quantity for the hungry stomachs. Such a food problem has been solved at Winona Bake, the summering place for Christian: people in northern Indiana, where there are from 5,000 to 15,000 people to be cared for every day, by the management building and operating its own hotels on a large scale, in buying and raising its own food supplies, and demands of the hungry are further met by the Winona authorities making it possible for many individuals to operate boarding houses. By following these methods, the Winona management has made it possible for the summer pleasure-seekers to live at the lake on any scale of luxury desired.
For. this season, when many thousand people will be at Winona Lake, the management has a truck garden to draw upon. A twenty-five-acre tract of land is under cultivation, and corn, potatoes, beans, tomatoes, onions, radishes and similar crops are thriving in the soil, only waiting to be gathered to garnish the dining tables of the hungry visitors. These vegetables are gathered fresh from the immense garden every morning and in wagons taken to hotel, boarding-house and cottage kitchens. The Winona management harvests its own ice from its own lake by the thousands of tons every winter, and wagons deliver the supplies over the park. From neighboring farms come the daily supplies of milk, butter and eggs. .
There is a large grocery In Winona park, owned by the Winona Assembly. Its stock of staples, canned goods and fruits comes largely from Chicago, traveling some of the way over Winona’s own trolley lines. The groceries are purchased in the wholesale districts of Chicago, loaded on a freight boat and shipped across Lake Michigan to Benton Harbor. There the cargo is loaded in a freight trolley car

The operations of the Winona, The Inn and Kosciusko Lodge, three of the larger hotels at Winona Lake, have been reorganized by the Assembly management for this season, the purpose being to give visitors good living at moderate rates. The Winona Hotel will be od the European plan, under new management. Its facilities and service will, as in other years, be on the same high order which has long made It a leading hotel in northern Indiana. Mrs. Adams, of Indianapolis, formerly of The Inn, will manage the Winona Hotel.
The Inn is to be occupied by the students of the Winona Normal School, where rooms and board will be provided them at a remarkably low price, while its 250 rooms can accommodate a large number and give them all the facilities of a well-ordered hostelry. There will be some rooms available to visitors ih The Inn on the European plan. Kosciusko Lodge, on the water front at the lower end of the lake, with a beautiful outlook on the waters and to the Winona woods, will have Its dining room open this season. The Lodge is an ideal retreat for those who desire genuine rest and quiet. Its rooms are comfortable, its porches broad and cool, a good bathing beach is at hand.
The Westminster, the new $90,000 hotel, under the management of a Presbyterian company, is one of the largest and most complete of the group of hotels at Winona Lake. It is well located ner- the center <jf the park. The Westminster will continue under the management of Mrs. Anna J. Atkinson, of Indianapolis. There are rooming and boarding houses by the score in Winona Park all of them catering to the comforts of pleasure seekers, students and others who come to Winona Lake, and this year it is the intention to make the prices more reasonable than ever —although moderate price is a govtruing rule throughout Winona Park.
