Jasperites In South Dakota.
Burke, 8. Dak., 5-29-08. _ Ed. Republican; I want to let my old neighbors and friends know just how things are in this part of th* country. As I told you in my April letter, people here had some of thelfl gardens made, but it came a hard frost about the first of May and frose everything. I got a fair start with the rest, and our garden looks a* well as any one’s. Have had some high winds and plenty of rain. Wheat, oats, flax, rye and barley are all looking good. There are no pond-holes here that I have seen, but I was told by one man that he had about an acre of oats under water. I will have to go and see the pond hole. I will think 1 am back home in Indiana, when I get my feet wet. Corn planting began here about the 10th of May and lasted until about the twenty-fifth. Our corn is coming good, and thing* in general look welL The class of people here are much the same as those in the east They are very kind and accommodating. It is raining today, a fine mist, and although we have had abundance of rain there is no water on the ground. And we can go to work ae soon as the sun comes out saw one of those twisters (cyclones) on the 27th, it was about IS miles from me. It. was in a region very thinly settled. I have heard no news about it yet The morning afterwards we found a new washtub in our yard, which I suppose the wind had brought I do not know where it came from. So you see there is trouble everywhere. feut so far as I have seen yet I like thle country very well. The boys and I have made back our car-fare in clear cash. ! jiJ Mr. H. H. Hayes and family like the country well and are getting along nicely, as are' also Mr. E. W. GWln and wife. ‘ They were over to see hie the other evehing. You people in the eaiithave no idea how some ‘of the people' frirm here. What would you think di man working 12 head of horses on two gang plows; drfvw Ing 6 ahead of him and leading • behind; having one mile through*; no rocks, no stumps, no pond-holest I will tell you no more at this tfina lest you think I am giving you wffid. Respectfully I am, JOHN STEWART, Burke, S. Dak.
