WORTHY MAN IS SENATOR GOODWINE
• » , • Republican State Convention Should Name Him for Lieutenant-Governor. An Honorable Record In Public and Private Life. HAS BEEN IN STATE SENATE FOR 12 YEARS Endorsed For the Honor By Tenth District Republicans, By Bar Associations, School Teachers, Stockmen and Business Acquaintances. A Man Grown Up From the Ranks and Not Spoiled By Success. A Few Arguments In Support of His Candidacy.
Wa are presenting .this week to tfie readers of the Republican a picture of Fremont Goodwine, of Warren county, for some years a member of the Indiana State Legislature and .at present a state senator. Early in the campaign this paper said of Mr. Goodwine: “Senator Goodwine is a high-class man, and has been in the state legislature as ’representative and senator for twelve years, and with Increasing popularity each year. He is no grandstander, no orator, but he Is the cautious, sensible business man, and is always to be found on the side of right. His record in
the legislature will bear the closest ,scrutiny." A better acquaintance with Mr. Goodwine and a better acquaintance with those who have known him closely throughout his public life leads us to believe that the previous comment about him was very modest - and that as the candidate that the tenth congressional district has so heartily endorsed we should say more about him and thus familiarize our readers with the mettle of the man that aspires to be the republican nominee for the office of LieutenantGovernor. Senator Goodwine has f<jr years been regarded as a leader in educational matters in the state of Indiana, and following some years as a school teacher he was county superintendent of his county, and has later been engaged as both a merchant and as a banker and has bad an education in the school of business experience that has strengthened him and qualified him as a capable legislator. Added to this la his long years in the state legislature, and the senate has honored him by appointments on the most important committees. He has been on the senate committee on education for six sessions, on finance four, on agriculture four, on banks three, on rules three, on railroads two and on public health two, and he has served as the senate member of the investigating committee ever since it was organised in INt. This committee “ftsits and inspects every state institution and state office, and his service on it has familiarised him with the doties of every office. There la no man seeking state of floe today with a wider
general experience, and yet his experience has not been limited in any of the branches he has had occasion to gain knowledge of, for he has acquired and retained information on each subject as he has risen from his birth place on the farm up through the country and common schools and then as teacher, educator, law maker, business man and banker. And all the time Fremont Goodwine has maintained a poise of common citizenship that has retained him one of the common people. He has not permitted his success in business and public life to destroy the simplicity of his ways
and has not scorned the ladder rungs by which he rose to his present height 1 In his own home, Williamsport, he has the confidence of all who have been associated with him throughout his life and his candidacy is endorsed by every man of his own home Others in this congressional district who aspired to state office withdrew in order to give Fremont Goodwine clear sailing and teachers’ associations, live stock and breeding associations, business men and lawyers have all passed resolutions commendatory to his candidacy and all give special and excellent reasons why they would like to see him advanced to be lieutenant-governor of Indiana and president of the senate.
With him as presiding officer of the Benate, committee appointments would be based on familiarity with the special fitness of the members of the senate, and he has a persona) acquaintance with the working dispositions of the hold-over members, and this advantage would be a considerable one. , If readers of this article are able to gather from it the true worth of Fremont Goodwine, they will hare when they have finished reading it the picture in the mind’s eye of the self-made man, grown great among his boyhood environments, and retaining f that estimable quality that keeps him still one of the common people. And then couple with this a sunny disposition, a smile that Is real and sympathetic snd winning, a record of honesty snd Industry, * studious demeanor that recoos before it Tp ■ponds, and yon have the type of man
that Fremont Goodwine is, and at the same time the .qualities that will be very valuable in making a fair and impartial president for the state senate. The republicans of the 10th congressional district have heartily endorsed Senator Goodwine’s candidacy and the resolutions they passed are here reprinted: Resolved, That we recognize the long and able service of the Hon. Fremont Goodwine, of Warren county, In the senate of our state; his general acquaintance over the state with the penal, benevolent and educational institutions; his large experience in the senate and upon the legislative Investigating committee since 1899, through whose labors vast sums of money have been saved the people of the state; his general knowledge of business, that of agriculture, which is the foundation of our wealth and prosperity, and his staunch character, being always on the right side of every great public question, and we therefore recommend and endorse his candidacy for the nomination of lieutenant-governor, believing that hiß name upon the republican ticket will add strength to that ticket in the coming election.
Senator Fremont Goodwine...Candidate for Lieutenant-Governor.
