Behold yon nook upon the hill, all oev•red with the winter's white! 'Tie cold and desolate enow and chilling to esthetic sight— And yet, beneath the snow is Hope—a thousand grasses wait the Spring When God will tearm the greening hills * - and spread His smile o’er every . thing! And sure as sunlight climbs the hill and melt* the clinging crust of snow, As sure as breezes cross the lea and smiling zephyrs weave and flow, This Hope will spring triumphant, free, and bless the hearts that gave it birth When Ice and snow and chilling wind encompassed ail the frozen earth! O man, when winter claims thy Life and all is drear and dark and soar, Go thou to where the wood is still and gather Hope and succor here! Have Faith that Spring will come once more and warm thee with its smiling rays. And give thee lease of fervent joys that follow in the days! There is no Winter long enough to thwart the Spring’s eternal sun^ — There is no way so black and foul but leads to where the light is won! Take heart beneath thy load, O Man. and nurse thy hope for days of , Spring— When God will warm the greening hills and spread his smile o’er every thing!
Struck His Galt A Missouri boy took a contract to saw a cord of wood for $1.50. He began earnestly. As fast as he cut the sticks they were thrown about those in cordwood lengths. Thus when but half the wood was sawed the general appearance was effective enough to induce the owner to pay the $l5O. When the hired man began to throw the stove-lengths into the woodshed, the deceit was discovered. After being whipped, the boy was apprenticed to a politician and the neighbors are now prophesying great things for him. As soon as he is big enough he will be taught to campaign tn the prohibition district and later drilled in those 1 precincts where a good-sized personal tank is a necessary equivalent to success. He has taken for his motto, "How I love the dear people," and is learning to remember faces, kiss babies and say with concern in his eyo: "How are you, Jones? How is Mrs. Jones—and the children?" , He is getting the hand clutch down to a science and is speaking to every Individual he meets, male or female, antediluvian or adolescent We will hear of that boy one of these days.
The Last Straw. rm sticklnr for the big show yet In spite of prices high, But if they raise the "sinker" rate Or boost the price of pie. I’ll cut this weary striving out And lay me down and die! Rag Time. Esthetic people are complaining about the cut of the trousers on the eagle that adorns one side of the new .ten-doliar gold pieces. I haven’t seen one of the new coins yet, but any piece of money of that denomination would seem to me tq be beyond criticism. I am for pensioning married men, all of whom are warriors and most of whom have seen long and hard service. A man hates like sixty to lose anything that he got In his extravagant days before marriage. He knows that he never will have money snongh for another such expenditure. It Is a wise son who knows when to laugh at the old man for hutting tod bead agalnot an opeta 'door. The saloon sign never falls In wet weather. The young man. who alms upward will not hit a cow in the next anyhow. The way married men boost the mat, rtmonial market and then smile, ought to warn a lot of bachelors who are itching to know the troth. ] .1 _*+ Wants to Trade.
