Some Political Suggestions. The couveutiou for the eelectiou ot delegates to the republican n&tional convention is drawing near. It will beheld next Tuesday in and will probably draw together a great many of the party leaders of tlie district. To ft ! I apiiearances there onij three candidates and as two ot them tvill l e selected theie is not very much of a scrap ou hands. The three candidates ate, 3eorge Ado, now announced as a safe ad ministration uiau; VV'ill R \Vood. of Lafayette, state senator and p omiuent lawyer a id politician, ami A. K. Sills, of Mouticello, also well kuowD. aud a formidable candidate whenever he goes after any position where the political game is played. It seems ‘tolerabjy certain that Will R. Wood is “agiu” the administration, and that he can not be counted upon to vote the will of the people, that is, to support Taft, should Fairbanks fail to be aouiinated. It may be that Senator Wood is not rightly figured, but those who have watched his train ing politically are of the opinion ttiat he is pledged to pass Taft up. Erery delegate should smoke him •at and make him state just what he will do, and then If he is elected a delegate, hold him responsible tor doing it Mr. Sills, smooth, and still magnetic, will prob- i ably oat with a statement of ; his intentions if he stays in the race, and if he is right, then he should be supported by all delegates who •re not willing to back op on the ; Roosevelt policies. There would , be plenty of room for another , candidate, If he would announce i himself firmly for the administra tion, and even tho he came ont a little late, he would probably get < the votes. This candidate is apt
to develop, and the Republican would like to see him get busy at once,' whether he comes from Jasper oounty or not. Word reaches us from both Benton and Newton county that unless Will Wood is tor the administration his best friends will be against himThis should be a good convention and Jasper county republicans that like spirited conventions should get in to attend it. It will be held in the afternoon in the opera house. . ' - In the morning of the same day occurs the county reorganizing con vention. There are twenty dele gates to this convention, and while it seems reasonably certain that there will be no| opposition to the selection of Secretary Moses Leopo'das chairman, the convention should be fnlly attended in order that the action may be ratified by a lull vote. In this connection we wish to urge that republicans make a special effort to get ont to the conventions Saturday that will elect committeemen. It is very important that good men be chosen to look after the party interests ip each precinct and their selection should be approved by all republicans who should be certain to attend the organizing conventions. These will meet Saturday of this week in the regular meeting places unless otherwise announced. Republicans everywhere should participate in this early organiza tion.
