Busy Docket In Newton.
Judge Hauley and Court Stenographer Sigler went to Kentlaud today to re open the Newton circuit court, which will a busy session the closing two weeks of the term. This week is being tried the cutting scrape of the two Elijahs, Arch and Orin, who last fall almost killed Tom Dowling, near Morocco. Dowling was ditch commissioner and went'to the librae of the Elijahs to -collect assessments and was almost murdered. He was hit over the bead with a spade and ent in several places with a knife, and the only thing that saved his lite seems to have been a pocket dictionary in his left vest pocket. The] knife had passed thru this little book and made a wonnd in his left breast over the heart. A great many people think the assault was proyoked and the evidenoe is apt to develop this, the Elijahs having been very retioeut since the occurrence. This case will probably take most all week and then the bog Stealing case will go over to the next week, and there are enough Other caws on the docket to make Ifee ensuing two weeks very busy Special discount sale on men’s heavy pants at Bowles & Parker’s Slothing store. Goodland 17; Rensselaer 9.
y —v- - •••• Oar high school boys got the short eh a of the basket ball game iaQoodland in more ways than one. They should have been entitled to the referee, bat were edged oat of this becaase they had not notified Goodland four days ahead .who the referee would be, as provided bythe rules, and then Mr. Phillips, the Goodland eighth grade teacher, who refereed the last halt, is alleged to have overlooked repeated foals committed by the Goodland players, and to have given Rensselaer some very ragged decisions. The room in which the game was played was very small and the baskets two feet lower than is required by regulation and the ceiling so low that Rensselaer was placed at a great disadvantage. Of the fourteen foals called against the Goodland team, Woodworth only succeeded in making three baskets. The other points made by Rensselaer were 2 field goals by Gowland and one by Long. The conduct there of the Rensselaer 0 boys is vonched for by Tillman and Dean.
Since returning home Mr. Tillman, who was acting mauager of the basket ball team at Goodland, Prof. Gray having been unable to go, learns that Goodland had been duly notified by Mr. Gray who the referee wonld be, and it seems that Goodland had taken advantage of Mr. Gray’s absence to deny that they had been notified. The teachers say it was>the rawest deal they have over had Ijerved to them daring their connection with athletics.
