Smith and Webb in Monticello.
The two desperadoes, Smith and Webb, who were implicated in the shooting and killing of Sheriff Oglesby, at Winamac, some weeks ago, are now in jail at Monticello, having l>een taken there Tuesday of this week, to answer the charge of burglary. The night before the shooting occurred Marsh Bros’, store, at Bnrnettsville, was robbed, and shoes discovered in the possession of these men bore the stock number and cost mark of the Marsh store, and they were seen on the day before the robbery in Bnrnettsville. The men were taken from tha Michigan City penitentiary, where they were being held lor safe keeping, on a bench warrant issued by the White county circuit court, to answer the above charge. Sheriff McCnlly and Marshall Rothrock, of Monticello, transfer red the prisoners, and were accompanied by Capt. Stultz and Wm. Strahle, of the Pan Handle detective force, and Sheriff Swisher, of Pulaski county. The men will be kept nnder guard night and day pending their trial at Monti cello, and any person found loitering around the jail will be arrested by Sheriff McCnlly or his deputies. During the short time the pris oners were in jail at Knox, following the murder of Ojlesby. many suspicious characters showed up iu Knox and made inquires about the men and it was feared confederates might undertake to free them trom the jail. This same danger exists iu Monticello, and the officers intend to guard against its occurrence.
