A Trip To South Dakota.
The majority of the people who intend goin.' to the Rosebud [reservation have no idea what it looks like or what it costs. It costs $24 from Rensselaer to Gregory for train fare. Bat we stopped at a little town called BOrke, it was dark when we arrived and we went to a hotel. They were crowded and we had to take a shake-down they charged ns 50c each for bed and breakfast. The next morning we started eut to Everal Smith’s, a former Indiana man, and while we were not personally well acquainted with him we were not long in getting acquainted. They were very kind to us and while we were there we made their home • headquarters. Mr. Smith drove us around for
three days. Mrs. Smith and other women we talked to said they liked tfiecountry fine. ' . While there we attended a public sale. Horses and cattle sold about the same as they do here. The jeople there have not felt the money pinch as people have in the east. ‘ ~ They had fair crops this year, although corn was not very good, oats went 4U to 44 pounds to the bushel, potatoes, pumpkins and turnips were fine. The salt grass was very good for hay. Mr. Smith and Mr. Gaston who now lives there and Wayne Gwin and ourselves all from Rensselaer are going to be located within a radius of tour miles, in the spring, the three latter having rented daces in that neighborhood for onethird grain rent. There will be a great many people go out at the opening of Tripp County (which is. coming in next year) thinking they are going to get something for nothing but they are going to get fooled. It will coat $17.50 to register one way and another. It will cost $25 to be ocated, then it will cost $l6O to file and $l6O a year for five years, and they are compelled to live on their claim lor 14 months instead of eight as formerly. If they do not have the ready inoney to pay their large expenses by the time they get thru with them they will be ready to come lome and earn more. Some people will think these facts aie not so, but they’re so any way, J. STEWART AND H. HATES.
