POPULAR VOTING CONTEST ■f ‘ m Althfo THE REPUBLIC AN Popular Voting Contest has not as yet been fairly inaugrated, extraordinary interest has already been aroused and the prospects are that the contest will-be a lively one when once under full head. Sixty nominations have been made for testants and will he announced later when the list is more complete. Before launching the contest in real earnest we want to have it fully understood by all our readers and friends who will be interested and especially by the ladies who plan to enter the race for a prize. A few who have spoken about the contest were of the .opinion that it was to be a “beauty contest,” because the ladies are especially interested. This is not the case; it is to be a popular Qontest, that is, casting of votes for the most popular ladies of this city and adjoining country territory, and while The Republican holds and always hias that Jasper has more good looking ladies to the square yard than any other county in the state, this will not be the question of deciding upon the best looking among them, but the most popular. Every person in this city will undoubtedly have some choice as to Who are the most popular ladies, and these will be the ones to be awarded the prizes in The Republican contest. Do not be backward about naming your friends as candidates, and the ladies so named should not hesitate in consenting to take part for the winners will receive prizes that will repay them, prizes that will be worth making an effort to secure. It costs nothing to enter the race aside from whatever personal efforts the contestants themselves may put into the contest to secure the necessary votes.

The Republican hopes the members of the various Churches, Lodges and Societies will place the names of one or more of their favorite ladies in nomination and .help her to win one of the handsome presents that will be offered. Candidates are not restricted to members of church, lodges or societies; any lady in Rensselaer and Jasper county is eligible to enter this contest and earn votes son herself. The-Republican advocates the things it believesare good for the people of Rensselaer and judging from the support it receives, its efforts are being appreciated. In order to increase its list, as well as afford a reward for faithful efforts on the part of the church, lodge and society working as well as others, The Republican is impelled to offer many valuable prizes to be voted to the ladies, who m the opinion of the people of this rity tmd vicinity, are most entitled to the honor and tokens of esteem. It is the desire of The Republican, that every subscriber, and in fact every one, should have a voire in tfafrawarding Sf the prizes, and the only regret is that a similar offer cannot be made for every one deserving such testimonial. This paper would suggest that the different lodges and societies take up the matter officially as well asiah those whohave lady friends They are interested m, and nominate candidates who will be the unanimous choice.
