The Gloved Gambler.
An American who visited Monte Carlo was telling of an incident there. “In one of the gold rooms,” he said, “a gentleman In lavender gloves was playing in wonderful luck, winning nearly every stake. As a great stack of plaques—you know those beautiful, big gold pieces called plaques—was pushed to him by the roupier I heard a young lady whisper in his ear: “ ‘lt Is very odd, monsieur, to wear gloves at play. What do you do It for? Luck?’ “The fortunate player smiled grimly. “ ‘Not at all,’ he replied. ‘I promised my wife on her deathbed never again to touch a card.’ ”
