CITY COUNCIL MONDAY NIGHT
Fourteen Property Owners Protest “ Against Acceptance of Main and * Division Improvements. The city council met Monday night with all members present* and City Engineer Gamble made his report on the improvement of Main and Division streets, the contract for the construction of which was let to W. F. Smith & Co. Ho reported the work completed according to contract, the distance from Washington street'to the railroad being 2,162* feet. No sooner had the engineer’s report been Sled than a protect signed by fourteen property owners against the acceptance was introduced, setting forth that the improvement was not according to contract. % The council arranged for a meet-, ing with property owners to go over the improvement Wednesday at 8 o’clock a m. and provided for a special meeting for Saturday night to farther consider the report of Ha engineer. All property owners seemed united in demanding that the street be built according to specifications, without regard to the appearance of the street or its lasting qualities. The contractors were authorized to fence up tho street until further action is takes. The marshal was instructed to put new covers on several catch basins, where the mesh was so largo it passed matter thru that clogged the sewers. Horatio Ropp, et al, petitioned for sewer on Milton street from Pine to the river. Petition referred to sewer committee. Mathew Worden, et al, petitioned for a3O loot roadway with street irom road. The petition was signed by almoßt'all property owners effected. Attorney fnstructed to prepare resolution. A. Leopold filed petition for alley in block 19. Resolution declaring for alley adopted. The town marshal was instructed to employ three assistants to help himself and Nightwatch Thomas on Halloween. He is looking for long-legged fellows and the sailing is apt to be qhite poor for the lad who has designs on his neighbor’s gate.
