WOMEN WORKERS SCARCE.
Hotel Proprietors and Housekeepers Search in Vain for Help. That the young women of New England have been affected by the wave of prosperity which has swept over the country seems evident by the great lack of help, especially noticed by hotel and restaurant proprietors and private families desiring housemaids, says the Boston Transcript The hotel men, whose business contlued throughout the year have been expecting to see the situation relieved somewhat with the close of the summer season and the consoqueut loss of employment by many women. The proprietors have, however, been forced to run their houses without the full complement of hqlp, and with a large number of the already much reduced force going to schools and colleges they have a supply inadequate for their needs. The fact, too, that the mills, factories and other establishments throughout New England have had a most successful summer and have prospects for an equally successful fall and winter does hot seem to promise mucK ehance drfelief rrbm a"sdiifce generally reliable for at least a small number of young women. The superintendents of these establishments are also on the lookout for more operatives. Hospitals are in need of helpers, telephone companies report a lack of operators, and stores, offices and other places are all in the same predicament, which seems to be general throughout all trades and occupations in the New England States. ' The smaller sitmmer hotels have been severely handicapped in the summer operations. In many cases the proprietor’s family had to wait on ta-' ble and care for the comfort of their guests, while others had to curtail their* season, owing to inability to get young women at any price. One at relieving the situation, and one which has occurred to many and in some cases has found acceptance, is the employment of Chinese to do table work. The idea has gained ground in the West, and A large number of Chinamenu are employed In American establishments in various capacities, taking the place of the young women, who are now so hard to find.
