One of the signs of growth ha oar postal system appears In the employ* ment of women. Up to 1862 women had never been employed In the service. Then they were admitted to the dead letter office—*lght of them. Now of the 1,195 employes in the department In Washington 809 are women, and there are in the whole country 27,600 women employed, generally tn the stamp delivery or money order offices, and receiving salaries running from S4OO to $1,700 a year. j
