The City Council.
Fixing of the tax levies for the ensuing tax year was the most generally important work before the City Council at their regular meeting Monday evening. The total rate agreed on amounts to $1,83 on the SIOO valuation, or ten cents less than last year. The levy is distributed over the different funds as follows:””

B. 8. Fendig asked for a permit to move an old frame residence he has recently bought of Dr. I. M. Washburn, from east Washington €"%jeet to Ben’s recently purchased -mi.?..* l ctjt- gtyf■£.nriAK.. and Cornelia streets, being the old Tom Spitler property. There are two vacant lots on 'this property between the old Spitler house and the Presbyterian church and upon these Mr. Fendig intends to place this old house and rebuild it into a tenant house for two families. Some of the people of the neighborhood, and especially the pastors of the churches near the spot, objected to the permit being grauted, but as the location is outside the present established city fire limits, the Council really had no power to say what kind ot a building Mr. Fendig should move upon, any more than to say what he should build upon, his property and the permit was therefore granted. This will set the tennis playing contingent to hunting a new place for their tennis court. The matter of a street light on the Bunkham road was referred to the light committee. Is Hie matter of the College Ave. and Vine street tacwer a resolution was passed fixing the preiVjsunary assessments and 'setting Oct. 14th as the time of hearing objections. A resolution was adopted for the improvement of Weston street. A remonstrance was presented against the improvement, which will be acted upon at a future meeting.
A. Leopold and others petitioned for an alley thru block 19 and the city attorney was instructed to pre pare a resolution for same. George F. Meyers and others presented a petitson for the improvement of Division and Scott streets to the width of thirty feet with cement curbings. The city attorney was instructed to prepare a resolution for same. A petition of Geo. W. Markin et al for an extension of water main was referred to water committee. The city clerk was instructed to draw an order for *53.30 in payment of the city's assessment on the Cullen and Forest street sewer.
