Platt Replies to Critics.
Senator Platt, as president of the Unitsd States Express Company, in a circular to stockholders, shows that the ; earnings and income for the first half of the 1 present year have fallen off, compared with the first half of the preceding year. The net income from all sources for 1907 ! he estimates at 7 per cent. This statement is regarded as an answer to the demands of minority stockholders for a division of surplus and their charge that the Platt family and their associates have Juggled the books to hide the profits from owners of stock. The minority faction alleges that rival companies have been repj resented on the board and that business has been diverted to competitors. M for- ! mal demand has been made for reform in the management of the company.
