Money Lust Hopeful Fact.
Bernard Shaw, in his recent essay, “First Aid to Critics,” makes the startling paradox that “the universal regard for money is the one hopeful fact in our civilization, the one sound spot in our social conscience,” while poverty he describes as “the chief crime, worse than murder.” He goes on to explain that money is a curse "only when it is cheapened to worthlessness for some and made impossibly dear to others.” Instead of spending so mudi time and energy upon catching and punishing our so-called criminals, Mr. Shaw asks if it would not be better to painlessly kill every adult with less income than SI,BOO a year, and nt the same time fatten and clothe every hungry and naked child.
